Are you ready?
Dracubat is beyond curious as to who these “others” will be. Shortly after Dracubat and Bullet are seated, they hear the heavy iron door open and whisperings. Dracubat does not want to appear rude, so he keeps his view remaining forward looking off towards the stage. Bullet begins craning his neck to the direction of the noise, but Dracubat stops him. “Bullet, look straight ahead. We will be able to see everyone in just a moment.
From the corner of his eye, Dracubat sees two slight figures on his left. They sit down quietly. Dracubat still stares straight ahead even though he can sense that more and more shadowy figures are present. Suddenly, a light comes on the stage and a large box is pushed forward from behind the thick green curtain. The box moves a bit and then is still. There are lots of quiet voices all around, but there is no one directly behind Dracubat or on the side of him, except for the first two figures that came in, but they are more than half of a row away. Again, the box moves and then a large gray hands pops out from the top.
There are still a few whispers as this is occuring, but once a bald head appears, the crowd is silent. A small, chubby gray man dressed in a black ducktail suit with white pinstripes exits the box. He looks directly at Dracubat and says, “it is time.” Dracubat knows immediately that this is the Voice. The small man reaches out to Dracubat summoning him to the stage. Dracubat does not fear this man, so he instantly flies up on the stage and hovers right next to him. The man stretches his hands towards the audience. “I told you he was the one.” The audience audibly breathes a deep sigh of relief. The man looks at Dracubat. “Yes, you are the one. Are you ready?”

Chi town lights
With their turbo speed in full effect, Dracubat and Bullet arrive in Chicago in less than two hours, still with plenty of time to spare before the midnight meeting begins. The crisp air of Chicago, especially during the late night hours has left them invigorated and with clear heads; they are definitely ready for their mission. When they first arrive at the Old Theater, they are not sure where they should enter since it is dark and no signs of life appear to be inside. They quickly fly around the building once but are perplexed, however, the second time they circle, a light pops on at one of the side entrances. They ground themselves and Dracubat pushes open the heavy iron door. There is a faint light inside, but it is very dim and the air feels thick.
Bullet looks up at his master nervously. “What are we to do, Master?” he asks. “We are to wait with patience and whatever we are here for will become known very soon,” Dracubat says. As if on cue, the “voice” from the phone announces itself. “Dracubat, I see that you have arrived, and with your trusted little friend. We still have some time before the meeting begins, so please seat yourself in the front and the others will begin joining you shortly,” the Voice booms. Because the theater is empty, there is no way to tell in what direction the voice is coming from because it echoes off the walls, ceilings and floors. “Thank you. We will find seats in the front,” Dracubat says. There is no response as Dracubat and Bullet walk towards the front to find seats.

On the fly
Dracubat jumps up and pushes the lid off of the coffin; Bullet is right behind him. The two scurry off to the kitchen for one last gulp of their green concoction which will give them the energy they need for the trip. Dracubat throws on his protective cape while Bullet eagerly awaits any last minute instructions from his master. “The travel coffin is all prepared?” Dracubat asks Bullet. “Yes, Master. It has everything we need inside and I’ve folded it up properly so that it will transport us to Chicago easily,” Bullet replies. This travel coffin has been a useful tool Dracubat constructed to serve as part suitcase and part airplane. The amazing thing about it is that it can be made to become invisible so that neither it nor Dracubat are ever detected while flying. Dracubat always automatically chooses for the coffin to be invisible and it is no different in this case, especially since this is a top secret mission.
The invincible bat and his best friend jump onto the coffin and secure themselves with the leather straps that are attached. Before Dracubat pushes the button to put the coffin into motion, he and Bullet chant their powerful verse that will allow them to be victorious in any situation. “To the Lords, to the Lords, we ask for the guidance from the legends that came before us. Their blood flows through our veins and provides us security against any forces that go against our true will. And so it shall be.” Dracubat nods towards Bullet and pushes the button which results in a quiet but forceful charge of the fire engine. The destination has already been set for Chicago and the two of them are off.

The Trip Ahead
Dracubat begins packing immediately. Bullet scurries about gathering some capes and a few outfits that Dracubat might need, especially if he has to go undercover. “Master, should I pull the red and black cape for you?” Dracubat looks at Bullet as if seeing him for the first time. He tries to hide the fact that he is nervous. “Of course, Bullet. That’s a great idea. Just in case something. . .” But he cannot bring himself to finish his thought. Bullet stares at his master wide eyed and runs off to retrieve the cape. Dracubat feels a lump in his throat.

The night before….
He walks over to the coffin he shares with Bullet and begins preparing it so they can wind down for some deep sleep.
Dracubat thinks about the long night they have ahead of them. Bullet finishes packing the miniature coffin that is filled with their personal belongings. After he closes the lid securely, he heads to the kitchen for their emergency nightcap. Dracubat begins mixing the special potion that will give the two plenty of energy for their long journey to Chicago. A few sparks fly as Dracubat throws in ant’s blood and grasshoppers to the green concoction. The two of them down two glasses each and then hurry off to the coffin so they can rest.
The air is heavy with thoughts about what exactly this journey is for. Dracubat keeps hearing the mysterious caller’s voice over and over in his head. As he closes the lid of the coffin, the caller’s voice is the lullaby that quickly pushes him to sleep. Bullet lies in the coffin at his master’s feet and is also quickly off to sleep.
Although Dracubat fell asleep quickly, he is not relaxed as his mind takes him traveling to the old theater in Chicago. He feels himself on the stage with a huge spotlight aimed at him. Bullet is nowhere in sight and as Dracubat faces the hundreds of rows of seats in front of him, he senses that their is an audience and somehow he is onstage for someone or something’s amusement. The spotlight is blinding, but Dracubat senses that Bullet might be in danger. He flies upwards trying to move above the spotlight but it moves and begins chasing him from corner to corner as he tries dodging it. Following his every move, the spotlight is so thick that Dracubat feels as if it has a physical hold on him. He flies towards the rows of seats and flies so close to the chairs that he is able to see physical bodies sitting and can actually feel the warmth of their breath. As he continues flying over the chairs, he feels the sensation of the spotlight tighten around his wings; he begins spiraling to the concrete floor below and as he falls, he hears a faint buzzing and someone calling his name in the background. His head hits with a thud and he feels something on his chest.
“Master, master, it is time.” He realizes that his dream has been interrupted by the fact that he has actually banged his head on the wooden coffin lid–he was startled by the alarm clock’s buzzing and Bullet’s gentle yet firm urgings to get up. He looks at the clock and it says midnight; he knows that it is time for the two to begin their trek to Chicago.

As Dracubat slaved over his computer, the telephone rings.
Dracubat: “Hello”

Dracubat: “What is this meeting about”

And the phone goes dead. Dracubat feels a deep concern inside. This phone call was strange. Bullet senses the despair and trys to comfort Dracubat. He cuddles up next to him and asks “What is the matter master?, Was it bad news?” Dracubat pats the pup on the head and replies “Nothing for you to be concerned about little friend, We will be taking a little trip to Chicago”……

“Bullet” - Dracubat’s best friend!
One rainy night, while returning from feeding, Dracubat heard a faint whimper coming from a basement window. He decided to check it out and flew down to investigate and he saw a little puppy. It had a particularly strange tint to it. As he crept through the basement window, the pup ran away behind an old chest. Dracubat calmly moved toward the little guy and in a soothing voice said “It’s alright little boy, don’t be afraid, I am here to help you.” Well, it was at this moment that Dracubat discovered a new power. The puppy spoke to him! It seems that Dracubat can communicate with animals!! The little pup said “I am afraid. People treat me badly. I am a different color than all the other puppies and they ignore me.” Dracubat replied “My name is Dracubat. I too know what it is like to be mis-treated.” He then explained the reason he was different. All about that horrible night that changed his life forever. “What should I call you?” asked Dracubat. “I have no name, sir.” the puppy replied. “Well we will just have to find one for you” said Dracubat. The pup then went into the chest he had been hiding behind and opened it. He pulled out a small but heavy chain. Attached was a silver bullet. “What is that” asked Dracubat. The dog replied “It is my only possession” Dracubat pondered for a moment and then exclaimed “Bullet!” “that will be your name. Do you like it?” The dog replied without hesitation “I like it! Bullet it is.” And they began their journey home.

Dracubat - My lonely boyhood
Let’s take a journey back…
After the “collusion” that created the young phenom, Dracubat was very confused. The bat like changes in his appearance had not changed yet, but young dracubat knew that something was different. He came to and thought he was seeing stars. If fact, he was, but it was the way he saw them that was strange. He could not only see them, he could hear them! A mutation had occured taking his human vision and his bat sensory glands. Little Dracubat would never look at the world quite the same ever again!
During the weeks and months to come, Dracubat would start experiencing changes to his body and mind. The strange powers were building inside of him. A tough road for a little guy with great abilities and no handbook on how to use them. Trial and error was his philosophy. The second power he realized was the ability to control weak minds. When asking his mother for a cookie before dinner, he would usually receive the response of “No! you’ll spoil you dinner” but now, he could ask for one cookie and be offered the whole box. Needless to say, Dracubat was starting to get interested in what other things he could do.
More on Dracubat’s developing powers in the next episode…..
